The Rich Man and Lazarus (Part I)
Topic: Hell

And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. (Luke 16:20-21 KJV)

In Luke 16:20-.31, Jesus used a story of the rich man and Lazarus to explain what the Hell looks like. He used this parable to make His disciples to understand what is the value in life. When He came to the point of the rich man’s eternal destiny, Jesus gave us some points about a place is called Hell.

First in verse 23, the hell is a place of torment or torture. The hell is a painful place. There is no way for anyone to rest. In his sermon, Bill Wises shared his personal testimony of experiencing of being in Hell. It’s a dark and painful place. Bill said that anybody can have difficult to breathe air and demons will torture the souls days and nights. The rich man also doesn’t have fresh water to cool his tongue (v. 24).

I remember one of children’s education cartoons showed that underneath of the earth is really hot. This temperature could be more than 400 degree. If anybody would dig into the center of the earth, his physical body easily died and his spirit will suffer there eternally.

Secondly, Jesus mentioned that the hell is a place of brings us back into past memory (v. 25). Good or bad, the rich man cannot move on to his future thoughts. He has difficult to erase his bad memory before he became a rich man. Or he cannot erase his memory of Lazarus begged him for food to eat.

Being an earthly rich is nothing more than heading into the trash. There is nothing wrong with having good things in our lives. God can bless us with $1 million house. But when we would begin to focus more earthly things than God, we would become like a rich man who ended his life in Hell.

Are you saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ? If you are not sure which road that you would take to eternality, please make a right decision today. If you would like to have relationship with Jesus Christ, please surrender your life to Him by asking Him forgiveness for your sins and invite Him to your life.
